Our family works 7 hectares of vineyards distributed all over the Canton of Ammerschwihr using ‘culture raisonnée’ methods (limiting the use of herbicides and pesticides): Varieties include Muscat, Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Pinot noir, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer…
…but the wine that we’re most proud of must be the famous Kaefferkopf. Both a locality and Alsace’s first ‘appellation d'origine’(designation of origin), its geographical limits were legally defined in 1932. The name refers to the vineyards sited to the south and west of Ammerschwihr, on several hills in the foothills of the Vosges, at an altitude of between 240 and 320 metres. The very characteristic taste of the wines that are produced here is a result of the combination of the special geological nature of the soil (clay and chalk and clay and silica) and exceptional levels of exposure to sunshine. This has produced an elegance and delicacy of flavour famous since the 14th century, which has made Kaefferkopf one of the best Alsation crus!
